I really like building neural nets and optimization models. I love thinking about meaning.
A few questions on my mind - hopefully I’ll update this list as I find answers or better questions.
Statistics and probabilities are tools we’ve invented to understand the quantifiable realm - what tools should we use to understand the unquantifiable?
The fatal hubris for modern technologists is that everything needs to be quantifiable - how can we reliably improve what is fundamentally unquantifiable?
idk i too stupid to come up with more questions rn check back later
2025 update: still stupid but have more questions, might type them here later
I graduated in 2020 from LMU with a BS in applied maths and a BA in recording arts (much to my mother's dismay, after rejecting an offer to study math at UCLA, an asian mom’s dream), then in 2022 from UChicago with an MS in data science (much to my mother's pleasure).
I’m currently an MLE at Snapchat based in the Palo Alto. In the past, I’ve worked/interned at TikTok and Tesla in the bay area, Amazon in Bellevue, BCW Group remotely, Lineverge in Hong Kong, and Taishin Bank in Taiwan. You can find my one and only published paper here, and my recent Scale AI hackathon prize winner here.
These goals I’m currently working on:
Make something useful (hard)
Ask better questions (really hard)
Maintain a healthy sleep schedule (undoubtedly the hardest)
An assortment of my favorite things
我台灣家巷子口的蔥油餅(臨沂街 x 忠孝東路二段)
Walk and talks in the highly air conditioned network of buildings in Central, HK (nature is nice too)
Pizzeria da Vincenzo in Udine, Italy
Front Squats
Akita Inus
More About Me
I don’t think I’m particularly worth knowing about, but here’s my story if you’re interested.
I was born in Taiwan in 1997 to a single mother and adopted by an American father and Taiwanese mother. I moved to Hong Kong not too long after, where I attended a local school taught in Mandarin until the 5th grade, after which I transferred to an international school for the remainder of my secondary education.
I graduated in 2020 from LMU with a BS in applied maths and a BA in recording arts, then in 2022 from UChicago with an MS in data science.
Professionally, I’m a machine learning engineer at Snapchat working on ads, and spent a short time at TikTok simultaneously sweating and coasting.
Previously, I was a data scientist (the first and only one on my team!) at Tesla building models to determine what cars to build, where to send them, and who to send them to. Before that, I’ve worked on fulfillment center optimization at Amazon, blockchain forecasting at BCW Group, supply chain process automation at Lineverge, and NLP analytics at Taishin Bank.
I consider myself a late bloomer; I was only able to somewhat “specialize” after previous bouts as a junior national rugby player, semi-pro esports coach, certified personal trainer, music producer, recording engineer, and just often being in an uncertain state and unsure of my future in general.
I founded (and failed) three startups before the age of 20, learning a lot of obvious but valuable lessons with some of my best friends along the way. I also co-founded a semi-successful finance mentorship platform with two other Clowns during a pivotal two years of my life; during its lifetime, we organized over 65 events, produced several 6000+ subscriber publications, had partnerships with top universities, and had a team of over 100 students, all of whom ended up in amazing careers :)
Joining Tesla seems to have been the canonical ending to my academic career, and while I’m happy, it was probably the first time in my life I have no idea where, when, and what I’ll do next. Well, that’s not entirely true; I want to do something meaningful for myself and for others, but I don’t understand meaning yet.
2025 update: this still hasn’t changed lol^
This is a home for my thoughts and a repository for new knowledge I’ve found on this journey of grappling with metaphysical concepts and figuring out how to better interact with the world.
